I met him just one time last fall.
He is a beautiful man.
I'm sure he can stay the place where he really wants to live, as long as he wants.
(Posted on 2009-04-08 05:27:00 by ) -
I hope the Korean Govt can let him live in the mountains. South Korea is a land of fascinating culture and religion. Having been known now as a advanced & high-tech society, Koreans need to let the world of their rich cultural heritage, like beautiful temples, Seon Buddhism, mysterious mountains. I was disgusted when i visited Seoul and saw the ugly mega-churches and the culturally-lost Korean Christians & i wonder what the hell the once proud Koreans became so lost!!
So, please save the culture of Korea and Mr Ham..let traditional Korean culture premeates the world!

Mr. Ham is an inspiration to others . Please let him be
(Posted on 2009-03-17 05:11:00 by ) -
Please let him stay where he has been!!
(Posted on 2009-03-11 17:04:00 by ) -
I dearly wish this man was my grandfather. And if this were cheerfully the case, i would be overwhelmingly irate if he were to be removed from his mountain cottage where we spent so many happy hours whittling chopsticks from larger sticks.
(Posted on 2009-03-10 19:00:00 by ) -
This is ridiculous, let the man stay and live there in peace.
(Posted on 2009-03-09 04:29:00 by ) -
Let the man stay in his mountains!
(Posted on 2009-03-06 09:29:00 by ) -
A man who has worshipped nature as Mr. Ham has all his life, deserves to be there more than the any government.
As his love is focused on preserving the mountain he loves, the KNPS should feel lucky to have him there keeping things right!
(Posted on 2009-03-05 01:37:00 by ) -
I am full support for Mr. Ham to stay in his home and natural environment
(Posted on 2009-03-04 22:11:00 by ) -
Hope this helps them see sense and let him be.
(Posted on 2009-03-04 21:37:00 by ) -
He's 81 years old, leave him be. He is the Father of the first national park. All the Best Mr.Ham. Love and support from New Zealand and Pohang!!

I support Mr Ham, and i hope that they will not take it away from him.

Please allow this man to live the life he has chosen. After all, who has any more right to claim a tree or rock or piece of land then one who is truly appreciating it?
(Posted on 2009-02-28 09:33:00 by ) -
There is absolutely no reason why Mr Ham should be evicted. For his service to the nation of South Korea, he should be given a medal and allowed to live anywhere he wishes!
(Posted on 2009-02-28 06:24:00 by ) -
Pls save Mr Ham and his home.
(Posted on 2009-02-27 23:05:00 by ) -
One should always be allowed to live in the most natural way possible; at peace and in harmony with the undisturbed land. Bless this man and may the gods let him stay.

Please allow Mr Ham who has spent his life serving the mountains to continue to live among them and continue the only life he has really known.
(Posted on 2009-02-16 12:57:00 by ) -
I support allowing Mr. Ham Tae-shik to remain in Jirisan to pursue his life's work.
(Posted on 2009-02-16 01:47:00 by ) -
We truly are a young species. Does ignorance and short sightedness really have to corrupt what could be an awesome and mysterious future? This man has offered and continues to offer a lot more than the men (I use the word men because of the male dominated Korean society) in suits at the KNPS.
(Posted on 2009-02-15 10:39:00 by ) -
You might as well kick John Muir out of Yosemite. A crime of the first degree! You have my full support.
(Posted on 2009-02-14 19:01:00 by ) -
I am ashamed of my government for discarding like garbage an aging man who played no small role in establishing Korea's very first national park. The North Korean adage of "repaying a debt with an insult" seems to apply here. This is yet another typical example of how bureaucratic greed and shortsightedness overcloud common sense in this country.
That a group of foreigners, who care more for Korea's environmental conservation than most Koreans themselves do, must submit a petition on behalf of this old man speaks volumes of the travesty at hand. . .
. . .Moreover, the fact that Mr. Ham Taeshik's eviction is compelled by the KNPS's plans to build cable cars that would ultimately destroy Jirisan's ecosystem is a disgusting outrage. I spit on the face of the KNPS's new chief director.

With the signing of my name I would like to add the fact that Korean culture is based in its relationship to the mountains. í¨ í ì íê¹ knows the traditions of this country before the war that split it in two. May he be honored as an elder, as is the essence of Korean culture.

This is a great example of beauocracy winning out over common sense. A man that has given his life to the development of Korean national parks should not be treated as a vagrant who must be disposed of. This is ludricrous an embarrassment to the Korean government.

Back in the Rockiy Mtn Natl Park there are some folks whose homes were grandfathered in as private property within the park when the park was created. When these people die, their land will be come park land.
I don't know if Ham has a homestead or bungalow of permanence and how old that it may be but I would like to see a country give him something back for his efforts. Perhaps a lifetime permit or liscence for spiritual sanctuary ? I am signing my support for a mediated solution that aids Ham.

Few people possess the ability to live in harmony with nature-and those few individuals are the reason life is worth living. Respect the people who respect the true meaning of life.
(Posted on 2009-02-10 11:47:00 by ) -
Allow Mr. Ham to stay in his home.
(Posted on 2009-02-10 11:21:00 by ) -
He deserves to stay. Please let him stay.
(Posted on 2009-02-10 02:49:00 by ) -
The mountains of Korea are treasures. Mr. Ham has lived in the mountains for 40 years now, and he has the moral right to remain for his tireless service and stewardship of these mountains.
(Posted on 2009-02-10 01:38:00 by ) -
In return for decades of stewardship, the very least the KNPS could do is allow him to stay home.
(Posted on 2009-02-09 21:45:00 by ) -
Please let him stay.
(Posted on 2009-02-09 15:48:00 by ) -
Mr. Tae-Shik Ham should be allowed to live out his life in his home. I hope that with the media spotlight the KNPS will be compelled to allow him to continue his way of life.
(Posted on 2009-02-09 08:01:00 by ) -
I was sad to hear the KNPS would treat so badly, a man who influenced the very creation of their organiaztion. Anyone who has worked so selflessly on the preservation of the beautiful nature Korea has to offer, should be rewarded for his service to the country and community, and be allowed to live his remaining days, in peace, in his beloved home, Jirisan.
(Posted on 2009-02-09 03:56:00 by ) -
I understand the wish to protect the environment that is envisioned in the KNPS strategy. It is commendable and worthy, and will probably lead to the preservation of Korea's national parks for years, decades, and generations to come. However if it comes at the expense of quality of life of those who have seemingly dedicated their lives to the service of the environment and those who come to enjoy it, then perhaps the price is too high. Surely there is some way to accommodate the need to protect the environment and the desire of a man dedicated to a national park, in a way that few of us can imagine or would choose to follow, to live out his life in a place that he loves.

(Posted on 2009-02-09 12:37:00 by ) -
Let Mr. Ham continue to live in his home...
(Posted on 2009-02-08 23:48:00 by ) -
It seems really wrong that the parks board is asking Mr. Ham to leave. I really hope that this petition will help KNPS have a change of heart.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 20:57:00 by ) -
Allow Mr. Ham Tae-shik to remain in the home he has know for 40 years.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 19:21:00 by ) -
Mr. Ham should be allowed to stay.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 14:55:00 by ) -
In the light of Mr Ham Tae-Shik's considerable contribution to Korean mountain culture over the last 40 years it is only just that the Korean National Parks Service allows him to continue to reside on the mountain.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 14:15:00 by ) -
Do not destroy this man's life. Let him stay.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 13:08:00 by ) -
Mr Ham MUST be allowed to stay, it would be a serious crime for him to be evicted after everything he has contibuted to the history of Korean National Parks. He deserves to live out the rest of his life in the mountains he has dedicated his life to.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 13:01:00 by ) -
It would be a shame to evict such a unique individual.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 12:49:00 by ) -
Treasure and honour Mr. Ham's service to his country. Do not remove him from the mountain he is a part of. We have much to learn of his connectedness to the land.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 10:50:00 by ) -
Let him stay.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 10:19:00 by ) -
I just like the mountains too. Let him stay.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 07:52:00 by ) -
Evivting Mr Ham would be doing a grave disservice to Korea and Chri-san. Mr Ham must stay and do the work he loves.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 07:41:00 by ) -
Evicting Mr Ham would be outrageously pointless, and would do grave harm to Jir-san's nature-human ecosystem. I implore the KNPS to reconsider its decision, and allow him to remain in his home for the remainder of his lifetime -- surely, they can be that patient.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 07:03:00 by ) -
Please let him stay! There is no good reason to evict him!
(Posted on 2009-02-08 06:29:00 by ) -
Having a fellow like Mr. Ham Tae-Shik living as he has on Jirisan for 40 years is something you'd never see in New Zealand's national parks, and I doubt that you'd find people like him in national parks in the US or Canada either.
It's people like Mr Ham - not "Rain", Boa or any other of the plastic, manufactured K-pop stars - that make the Korean experience so interesting. Without his presence in the park Korea will lose some of its uniqueness.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 05:35:00 by ) -
Mr Ham must stay, 40 years and to be evicted for seemingly no good reason.
(Posted on 2009-02-08 04:01:00 by ) -
This entire situation simply doesn't make sense. Why should this man be forced to leave? Why now, after all the decades he has spent living in Jirisan? What purpose does this serve? It just doesn't make good sense to me. Mr. Ham should, without question, be unconditionally allowed to continue to dedicate his life to the conservation and preservation of Jirisan; he should be allowed to live his life as he's chosen to live it. Who is he disturbing? No one. Leave him to his life and his life's work.
(Posted on 2009-02-07 18:50:00 by ) -
I stayed at the shelter almost 10 years ago. . . I am not sure why Mr. ham would be forced to leave after dedicating his life to preservation and proteting Jirisan national Park. Please allow him to continue his life's work and continue to be an inspiration to others. maybe instead of eviction he should recieve a medal?
(Posted on 2009-02-07 17:29:00 by ) -
While reading guidebooks about Korea, one of the things that intrigued me most about Jirisan was reading about the man who lived in and operated the Piagol shelter. I would like to know that if I go in the future Mr. Ham Tae-shik will still be there. After reading more about this situation, I think it is shameful that the KNPS is thinking about removing him from his home. Let Mr. Ham Tae-shik stay!
(Posted on 2009-02-07 17:10:00 by ) -
Don't evict him.
(Posted on 2009-02-07 14:28:00 by ) -
Madness. Let Ham Tae-Shik stay!
(Posted on 2009-02-07 13:08:00 by ) -
I met Mr. Ham during my first trip to Jiri-san, and he took great care of me at the mountain hut. He is definitely a part of Korean Mountain culture that should be protected and cherished.
(Posted on 2009-02-07 12:01:00 by ) -
It's disgraceful for KNPS to contemplate this eviction. He must be allowed to stay.
(Posted on 2009-02-07 11:24:00 by ) -

Save the home the venerable Ham Tae-shik.
(Posted on 2009-02-07 10:22:00 by )
The Venerable Ham Tae-shik is an important figure in the history of Korean national parks and one of the most intriguing modern figures of Korea's mountains.
Though Mr Ham influenced the establishment of Korea's first national park and has been living in Jirisan for 40 years, the Korean National Parks Service has decided to evict him from his mountain shelter home.
Please sign our petition to save Mr Ham and his home. Help send the message to the KNPS that given his past and continued service, Mr Ham deserves to stay in the mountains and continue to live the life that he loves: in service of the mountains and the mountaineers that visit them.
I just like the mountains.
- Ham Tae-shik
Mentor and student: Mr Ham Tae-shik and KMPL president, Shawn James Morrissey at Mr Ham's shelter.

Save Mr Han, if you can.
